Monthly Archives: August 2005
KA-NA-SAI, we are going to collect our album TODAY!!!
yes yes yes, we are in subang right now. all the ugly guys are still sleeping. i can’t sleep, too excited about. the CDs are ready in cheras, to be collected by uglymen. we are so excited about it. we were supposed to collect at 10am but the place where we stay right now is a house-hostel… the students went to colleges and all of us locked from inside — so, our CD is priced at RM30, if fire strucked and burnt us all, our CD will sell at RM60.
the CDs are now safely kept in a CD pressing factory in cheras. we are waiting for the students to come back at 11am to release us… hopefully no fire happens lah… hehehe…

UGLYMEN CD out on 29-AUGUST-2005
yes, yes and yes. our album will be out on 29-AUGUST-2005 evening. we will be in KL for a performance called “The Live Gig 1″ at newcom, old klang road on 28-august-2005 9pm onwards. please be there to support local chinese indie bands. for more infor, please check out the “Shows” section on the right. we hope to bring the CDs back to penang for distribution on 29-August. those who are in KL, we will have a few mobile distributors to carry our CDs. we are cracking our heads to think of ways to distribute our CDs.
we are EXTREMELY busy for the album released and will be working very hard to reach our debut album “UGLY” to as many people as possible. for those outside malaysia (if there’s anyone interested), please email us at all@uglymen.net and we’ll discuss how we can send it over to you guys.
UGLYMEN debut album is titled “UGLY” and it will be available ONLY in compact disc (CD) format. price for each CD is RM30.00. there’s 10 + 1 songs. 10 full songs and 1 introduction song where u can download right away from our website.
to our fans — this is our way to share our music to you guys out there and we wrote/arrange/play/sing with all our hearts. thanks for believing in us. please support us by purchasing original UGLYMEN CD. we need the investment to support us in production cost, traveling cost, rehearsal/jamming studios, instruments maintenance, time spent, music books investment, costumes, hard work and other bits & pieces. it’s hard to produce “UGLY” CD if we are broken. the CD sales will not make us rich but it will definitely spell another UGLYMEN album.
by the way, if you ask who are the distributors… well, our distributors are loi kai jiunn, sow say hooi, michael lee & ong tai suan.
TIGERS Independent Chinese Band Competition 2005 National Final
uglymen (minus kaijiunn) was at the final last nite at channel dance club (jalan sultan ismail, KL). the pub was previously called KL Life Center. uglymen competed in the guiness canto rock national final at this venue in 1996 (30-august) as well. there’s 9 bands together. the atmosphere was nice, with a lot of music styles from the competing bands. kudos to:
- champion – den den (3 piece hardcore punk from KL). they got the crowd on their feet and started moshing. i ran away… kakakaka… afraid of injury. style was nice, creative and daring.
- 2nd prize – dream machine (7 outfit nu metal act from sarawak). daring and give-no-shit attitude. nice.
- 3rd prize – whitelight (4 piece instrumental lads from penang). beautiful strong melodies. nice guys.
- special experimental prize – citizen of ice-cream. they are the MOST out-of-this-world band to me. they were so intensed when they played.
actually, we love the way SLAP! from sarawak performed. to us, they played the tightest amongst all the bands. their songs were surprisingly simple but well structured in a way that you WILL need to have some kind of knowledge to be able to write that kind of songs. it’s catchy and we’ll know they will go very far in their music endeavour. they have been playing together since 1999. 6 years together — the guitarist rambo has 2 kids already! they are nice dudes, cool and humble guys. dream machine and slap! gave us one piece of their albums to us. THANK YOU, brothers!
the rest of the bands were cool. one that caught my eyes were a pop rock band from melaka. the singer has a nice and high voice. hmmm, maybe i’m a pop kind of person.
overall, the competition was very POSITIVE and a personal thanks to mark of soundscape records for REALLY trying hard to ensure that chinese indie bands have the opportunity to perform and share their music. he hasn’t given up and his motiviation and heart are so strong that he has become one of the many persons who inspire UGLYMEN to go on and on… LONG LIVE INDIE MUSIC/BANDS
UGLY album will be out in 2 weeks time

haze worsen in KL at 11am 11-august-2005
i got this latest image from our webmaster, paul ooi and the API hits over 500 in some areas: here
everyone in central malaysia, be careful, wear mask, stay at home and drink lots of water.
here’s a latest photo from KL. it captures the haze situation and i read that the government might declare an emergency on this (darurat) where everyone needs to stay at home. this is not confirmed but as a last measure if the API is still increasing. let’s pray for RAIN!!!
the mentor speaks
kaijiunn drums teacher, my drums teacher and also our music/band mentor cikgu badrul hisham commented something which we (UGLYMEN) haven't known before even after knowing him for 12 years. he commented one of our posts:

Uglymen (ex-Vintage)!! Cikgu would like to grab this opportunity to drop a line or two here…
YOU guys had made my dreams come through!!…Thank You!!! Why did I say so? Hmm…Please read carefully on what I'm going to reveal here
“TO PRODUCE GREAT AND SUCCESSFUL CHINESE MUSICIANS/BANDS” as many as I could (because there were so many malay bands around at that moment while chinese were rarely seen!) is the very FIRST goal I put in my mind at the time Mr. Ng Cheng Teik (my schoolmate) and I were discussing about the feasibilities on setting up a NEW music centre/school (now Muzik Sistem) with NEW concept back in year 1990. (I think I'll just stop here, sorry!)
Sincerely said, you guys had been the model and catalyst or interest-igniter for others to pursue in music learning and performing as a band since the said Charity Unplugged Concert! I'm PROUD of and THANKFUL to you guys!! ![]()
— end of message—
thank you cikgu badrul for the insight of playing wonderful music.
