we played 3 songs last nite: robot, ciak kaki and do mi do. didn't manage to squeeze in “si ai bin” as time was running short and the super market was closing already. by the time we played the last song, it was already 10.20pm. prize giving ceremony hasn't even started yet.
our playing and sound were nice and tight. vocals were full. playing was solid. such unfortunate to play only 3 songs. we wanted to give all out because the stage sound feels nice. i think we had a great playing time last nite than we had one week ago in penang. the sound was loud but controlled. even the music crew was having an easy time with us.
this year, we have 12 bands competiting and HONESTLY, i was disappointed with the standard as far as:
- sound control
- arrangement
- technical ability
- showmanship
music style wise, it was ok as we have a variety of styles to keep us awake. but what made us feel bad was the lax performance from some PRO/high-skilled bands. they were like having a jamming session on stage without any stage contact with the crowd. they played as if they are playing to themselves without having thoughts that the crowd is watching them.
asian beat MEANS crowd needs to be entertained. i was disappointed because i really loved some of these (old-timer) guys and hope that they can show off something and blow us away with their music. instead, we are lying to ourselves that these bands are good and they “should” earn some sympathy points — which is UNETHICAL (at least to myself).
SOUND CONTROL – bands should take an effort to learn to LISTEN to their OWN band members playing. if you are a guitarist, you should listen to your bassist and your bassist should listen to the drummer and the vocalist should be able to listen to all of your members' instruments. the sound MUST be clear and NOT muddy. crowd wants to listen music, NOT mud. learn to play CLEARLY and CLEANLY.
ARRANGEMENT – do something which is unpredictable and something smart. not something like “intro-verse-preChorus-Chorus-solo-bridge-Chorus-end”. learn to create something original and new that people can connect with. do something that is NOT-USUAL but musically creative and original. NOT plagarizing linkin park and put your own melody/lyrics.
TECHNICAL ABILITY – this is something you need to collect over the years. BUT at least practise with your bands. if you want to compete in asian beat (or any competition), you need to practise. you dont practise 2 times and HOPE that the judges will give you marks. and you DON'T get angry because you LOST when you only practice for 2 weeks. and DONT get angry at other bands because they win (with their own hard working rehearsals).
SHOWMANSHIP – you dont jump and headbang alone with your other members watching their fingers playing and CALL that showmanship. showmanship is your presence, costume, make-up, charisma, crowd contacts and moves. you have to PRACTISE showmanship during your jamming sessions. DONT hope to do REMARKABLE showmanship if you do it adhoc on the spot on stage. britney spears and her dancers don't do magic on the spot on stage. they practise their butt off.
in short, ASIAN BEAT looks for:
- an ORIGINAL band that blows people off their seats with their own (unique) music style, (unique)performance and something (unique) that people does not see often. dont come and play linkin park and EXPECT to win.
** apologize for sounding harsh above — but i hope that the above messages wake people up. UGLYMEN lost so many competitions, failed so many times but in the end our perseverance guide us through thick and thin. if i do made you feel upset, please accept my apology. if i DID inspire you with the above, i hope to see you become successful one day. i do not mean to be a smart @$$ or show-off BUT i do MEAN to encourage people to be better always and move forward all the time and always EXCEL in whatever they do. BOLEH!

“Loud but controlled”.. Super agree with ya ppl, the sound last night was CRYSTAL CLEAR.. Those ppl who were not there last night, whut a waste.. You guys just missed all the FUN!.. Looking forward for more great stuff from UGLIES… ‘Add oil’ UGLY!!

I think the show was too ROCK yesterday, so happened that the next day morning the JUDGE’s server room got a power trip and one of his server was down and few of them showing amber lights…

boo2, yeah — i received the sms alert around 9 am, i guess. i was still asleep… but was totally awake when it says one of the servers is DOWN. @^%$#^%$, the first thing came to my mind was someone rebooted the server. (the place where i work, we installed an alert mechanism which monitors the computers/servers of performance, network, disk space and services. this morning, our server went down, the alert mechanism SMS me telling me which server was down at which time).
ah beh — rock on. the messages that i wrote, i do hope that people use it as a challenge in anything they do. and hope to inspire them to be better.

It’s hard to voice real thoughts out as it might be a little bit offensive and you’ve just gained my respect through this.
My band, as you know, would fit more onto the part where we just go on stage to jam, and from your journals, Dysnomia has qualified to enter;

Oh gosh.. it fits to all four parts you complained about.. :’(.. I have to admit for my first performance, I can tell that some people got bored because of the way we played.. no coreography but just music..

hello, hey I think we are in the same position in work… I means
you have to jaga your server I have to jaga my chicken. when powerline
is down or one of your server is down or many of them are down; like my machine(s) is/are down;both of us have to support till they are UP again…
very chi cham…but got ugly music to reduce the stress I guess it’s will balance up and should be okie…nice to meet you here!! heard from tai suan you are very helpful guy and help him a lot!! keep it up man!! hope can meet you!!
