itosii grand concert updates, uglymen live concert DVD & eric johnson live in Singapore concert

October 8th, 2005 by taisuan · 11 Comments

preparation has been made for the itosii grand concert to be held at an open air field in sungai nibong, penang mainland on 27 november. this is a charity concert organized to collect donations for a local fire brigade, something noble which we felt we should contribute.

we are blessed with half-baked talents and friendship which made us united for so long. to do something for a good cause using our ability and hard work are something we found to be satisfying knowing that the money collected will be used to do something useful and help the local community. politically wise, who else is going to fund the local fire brigade? i’m not going to elaborate further, because this is a ROCKER website, not political website :D

to do something charitable using god-blessed ability in anyone of us is an unselfishness and humble act. anyone of you who thinks that you may have something to share and spare, do so now and help the needy. the reward is NOT hoping that god will give you 4D numbers in your dream BUT realizing that you are making someone else lifes better. when the needy show you the appreciation, it’s PRICELESS!

alright, enough with the speeches; we are expecting between 5,000 to 10,000 strong crowd to flock to see this concert. and we really hope to see 10,000 instead of 1,000 coming out to support this noble cause. VIPs are invited and i was told that the organinzer is inviting a very BIG SHOT to grace this concert.

the concert will be filmed by professionals and the event will be recorded into DVD and made available to the market. yes, it means, UGLYMEN is gonna have our own live concert on DVD. the DVD is going to feature both itosii and uglymen.

INSIDE SCOOP: itosii will be playing one of our songs and UGLYMEN gonna play around 4 songs. more to come, stay tuned!

eric johnson is coming to singapore and perform (22-OCT). i really wanted to go and watch but after cracking my head for a few days, i have decided not to go eventhough it means that i’m going to miss this once in a lifetime performance by the “KING OF TONE”. i can imagine myself in AWE/WOW for the first 3 or 4 songs, but will probably get bored after a while. eric is a good guitar player but an average song writer (thats my opinion). i’d rather buy his LIVE CONCERT DVD (to be released on 1-NOV-2005) and watch at home many MANY times. the thing that i’m going to miss if i dont see him play live is his MASSIVE TONE and PLAYING TIGHTLY with his band. the only MOST IMPORTANT thing that i’m going to miss is the TONE (i can’t play like him AT ALL). heck, it’s gonna cost me RM500 for the (quite cheap) ticket and whole trip to singapore. and i have to beg to my so-long-never-call friends in singapore to let me sleep at their apartments :D

Eric Johnson is my top favourite guitarist. I am having the same thought after reading this post. Tai Suan, u order the DVD already? Must lend me or burn me a copy if u got it later. I am gonna watch it over and over again. I really hope i can watch his live performance, but i am broke. Really pity to be poor guitarist.

    Hello

I paid the SGD122 for the ticket for the Eric Johnson concert. It was in the 8th row, so it was well worth it. Lucky for me I have a cousin in Singapore so I stayed at his place. His live tone is even more unbelievable than the recorded stuff. I have all his teaching videos and also a g3 video, but the tone is phenomenal, esp the dirty lead tone from his Strat. Sounds fatter than a humbucker even though he’s just using single coils. He was using his normal setup – two Fender blackface amps for the super clean tone (really super clean) and an older Marshall for the dirty lead tone.

What’s amazing is his virtuosity and the way he phrases and switches in between clean and dirty tones every few seconds to suit the mood of the song.

Can’t say much about the sound system – Eric’s tone was OK, but Chris Maresh (bass player) was really muddied out in the mix. Pity, because he is a fantastic player.

I noticed that EJ was playing his new signature series Strat by Fender. So he didn’t bring his trusty ’54 Sunburst. But the tone is still the same.

I saw him five years ago in Bukit Jalil during the badly organised Rentak Asia when G3 was here, and as usual he played Trademark and Cliffs of Dover.

What I did notice was that he made quite a lot of mistakes or could be that he didnt have enough time to warm up. Nowadays his picking style is so much into the “picking up and away from the string”, I felt that the leads were a bit weak sounding sometimes.

Also this time there were some rhythmic strum tricks.

From where I was seated I couldn’t see his effects rig, but I did notice a wah pedal and his Ibanez TS-9 tube screamer.

BTW I have heard the latest Bloom album and I don’t really care much for it, I really like the classic EJ (on Ah Via Musicom) compared to the new-agey stuff on the latest Bloom.

    Cheers
