  • beh // Nov 19, 2007 at 10:42 pm

I would love to see or attend such event more; it’s very relax and enjoy…I would say this is a very sucessful event being held by d organiser. It ain’t easy to put all those bands and dance and programe together..

The only things I was not please is the soundman the person who take full control of the PA system.

From I standing there and watching d bands performaning; the soundman’s didn’t deliver gd job on the sound. some of the bands got great sound like “one nite stand”, “Nao”, the jazz bands…and on other many of the bands like Uglymen, Ocean of Fire, Yu Yang and etc really gotten shitty sound…

I really couldn’t figure out why becoz’ they equited with great gears…I means gd amps…

When uglymen performed, the low or bass too much and the mic keep hamming, really potong the steam man…or else they will kicking more….I was truely disapointed…

This also happen when ocean of fire kick of with their first or second songs at their early performance. I was like what the FUCK_the soundman did with the PA…he was like not controling the sound….as well as the last band forgot the name of the band, the sound was totally out of control….but some bands can get a great sound like Nao…I couldn’t figure out why…

kelvyn who is the soundman???? maybe next time dun ask this guy to be the soundman becoz’ all the great bands to perform there their faith in their performance all are in the hand of the soundman…I would say great bands like ocean, uglymen and others were gotten bad luck with such kind of soundman..or else I believe the bands will deliver more!!!

anyway, anyhow its happened already..and wish in coming gigs there have some improvement in their sound system and sound crew…overall its a great show!!! I njoy it very much!!!

    rockoN!

  • kelvyn yeang // Nov 19, 2007 at 11:52 pm

    point taken.
a meeting has been called. and we will eradicate all problems as much as our ability and budget allows. i want to thank uglymen for complying with my time rules. dont worry. next gig i will draft a better plan with more time for priority bands.

  • wenzi // Nov 20, 2007 at 1:20 am

maybe er… before event start.. the soundman nid to be brief bout the song?

anyway… hope to see again next time :D with better sound :D

  • michael // Nov 20, 2007 at 2:13 am

Gnap… bcos we are tall ma….

    kekekekeke…..

its screen shots… maybe the DVD player play us tall tall lo…

  • beh // Nov 20, 2007 at 2:38 am

    wenzi,
that’s a really gd point!!! but I dunno wherether can be done or not..becoz’ if event like such, got a lot of bands and if needed to brief about the songs before kick off, I think a bit hard for the soundman in doing so(memorize all the bands’ songs)….

two things, get an experience soundman tat will help a lot; also before event starts have some sound check for each bands or performers.

In here, can be said 98% of the bands or performers did not take the sound check seriously; maybe time is not given enough but I think this is not the main reason; the main reason is that they did not reliease how important for the sound check is in live performance.

This is the biggest weakness for the bands here; tis will go to uglymen as well. I keep telling them sound check sound check sound check and sound check….

That nite was a great example; they did sound check, they did play an intro juz to check wherether their instrument got sounded or not…and they did not check the balancing, dynamic of their playing; I means there is enough for the punch in the powerchords??? itz the bass too loud???or vox not clear enough??? such kind of things…

that’s why alot of time they cannot kick becoz’ they did not take sound check seriously. If they cannot hear what was the sound “out of the stage” they could ask some friends but they did not done it that nite; I was tak boleh tahan lagi coz’ the bass was killing my ears and pull down the whole mood and run to them…

Uglymen always not taken sound check seriously!!!

They always check only their instrument got sound or not and not checking the dynamic of their playing for their tune if combine all their instruments… did their instruments sound rite for their tune when playing a song?? they never consider this…

This is very important, I told Suan, Mike numbers of time…and they keep repeating the mistake.

I pointed out becoz’ its gd to let them know and let others know that “sound check” is not juz simply check your guitar, bass, drum got sound or not…

I recalled back when I was in “rentak asia concert” I was there to watch G3…

I remember each of them, Eric Johnson, Steve vai and Joe Satriani, they sound check and check and check till few hours….I could stilll recall VAI took about 2 hours plus to check the sound and resetup the setting and check again and again till the sound crew was sastify with the sound.

You know why those pro take sound check so very seriuosly??? becoz’ this is their nite to kick ass and if the sound isn’t rite for them, they will get it till its rite for them befor they are kicking off…Its their nite to kick ass, its represent them. if its lousy sounded, this will put a negative marks on them and they will not allow this to be happened…

Same things when I was at Metallica’s concert… they had hired a group of great sound crew done great sound job for them. I believe every great concert behind must have a group of great sound crew that can carry out the gd job for them. It’s live you know you gotta have great sound in order to kick ass..

For me, if you dun have a group of great sound crew support you then you have to have help yourself. check the sound for yourself or ask friends listen to the balancing and comunicate with the soundman yourself, I think this is the least things you could help your band to deliver more to the supporter or audiences at your live performance. rite??

This is learning experience, so..Uglymen remember to check the sound properly and seriously…

    rockoN!

  • fleaman // Nov 20, 2007 at 11:43 am

    ah beh.. u good la…
    hhahahahaha….

i’m not trying to be sarcastic here.. but have u played on stage before? did u know that, sound check is just a fraction on what will happen when u go up and play live….

Lots of area can go wrong whenever you’re playing live… sometime the amps.. get heated up…. since there’s so many bands playing…
hand sweating.. cause u to slip while slapping or picking the guitar… drums setting (shared by all)… lots of adjustment made by all…
More crowd.. n sound changes in the environment… etc etc….

The pros u mention, its their concert.. they can have sound check like a week or so… it doesn’t matter.. coz its their show -and u pay to watch them.

As for the local gigs.. u need to share resources.. and soundman needs to accomodate to all…which is very challenging…

trust me… even if u play 100 times… everytime u go up.. its a “rush” that the mucisian likes…that’s what make them hooked and play music…

i got to admit… playing live is addictive!

  • taisuan // Nov 20, 2007 at 2:35 pm

all points are valid. we would want sound check badly but circumstances did not allow us to do so. kelvyn did ask us to come the previous day (friday) but michael was working and i need to attend a family gathering.

however, based on my past experiences, a good soundman (with good attitude) will be able to make a difference even if a band/group did not do soundcheck.

actually, i wanted to go to the mixer and take over the soundman’s position because he was ruining PAKU’s sound badly. it hurt my ears.

soundcheck is important and agree to fleaman too — too many variables can affect the sound.

but you guys (frustration, rants, complaints) are taken seriously and positively by us. if you don’t LOVE us, i think you don’t even bother to write here. cause i personally think u guys care HOW we sound, you guys rant about it. appreciate a lot brothers and sisters!!!

i take band performance complaints seriously to improve. thanks again.

anyway, don’t worry, i’ll talk to kelvyn to improve on future gigs/shows/concerts

  • Glacius // Nov 20, 2007 at 2:58 pm

I’ve seen that soundman before the Happy Sat gig..

First time was when me and my band opened for Paku or the Church Street Cafe gig.. Very weird drums mixing, by the way.. Wouldn’t want to start on that.

But as per Penang World Music Festival Pre-opening show @ Upper Penang Street, Inca Maca (some Red-Indian band from USA?)’s percussionist had problems with one of his Roland elec percussions, and I saw that same soundman taking care of the PA system. I was in front of the percussionist taking pictures and he showed gestures that he wasn’t satisfied because his percussion had no output to the PA system ..

or something like that, I’m not too sure.. I remember during the time of the Church Street Cafe gig, but there’s one thing I know about him - he was rather picky in whatever he wanted to do..

    BUT I LOVED HAPPY SATURDAYYYYYYYYy

    (minus Six String Samurai’s performance)

  • wenzi // Nov 20, 2007 at 9:18 pm

er… too bad i am not good in sound thing.. but its obvious if a band not in tune or the balancing not good.

for example…. er.. the band is too loud than the vocal sound.. its too obvious.. tot the sound man shuld balance it?

hmm maybe the enviroment also might er.. affect the sound? i donno =.=

    anyway… nice happy saturday :D

  • taisuan // Nov 20, 2007 at 10:48 pm

since we are in the discussion on band sound balancing, here’s my take. it may sound true to others and rubbish to others. and i’m still learning everyday.

the sound balance must first comes from the band. let’s take a normal 4 piece band: keyboard, guitar, bass and drums. with 1 lead vocal and 2 backing vocals. here’s my take and i try to balance them as simple as possible. here’s how it should sound:

    1. the drumset must be balanced itself acoustically — the drummer must be able to balance his snare, kick, crash and hats so that they sound balanced and not the snare ONLY being the loudest or the hi-hat being the loudest.

    2. the bass guitar should have more mid than bass and treble in his sound. the punchiness of the bass comes from the low frequency of the bass drum (low frequency) supporting the meaty mid bass guitar. the bassist has to compromise his sound and not boost his deep low bass from his 6-string bass guitar because the house speakers may not support it. the bass guitar should be round so that it supports the bottom of the music, literally. super low bass sound will not work in gigs like this because the house sound is cater for ALL bands who have normal 4 strings bass.

    3. the guitar should have more mid than treble and bass. band treble (high) sound comes from the crash and hats while the low end comes from bass guitar. if the guitar has too much treble, it will mix terribly with the crash/hats of the drummer and ears will hurt = noise. if the guitar sets the bass to loud, it will cover the bassist. the guitar must sound like…. a guitar. guitar tone takes years to master. i can only simplify into these: set clean, with a touch of reverb and make sure your overdriven sound retains the guitar tone or BEST - reduce the distortion until you hear the original guitar sound. and u know what? i dont think any guitarist will give a damn to what i write here… bwahahaha…

    4. keyboard is easy to mix because they are very clean. most soundman finds the opportunity to boost the keyboard because they are the cleanest.

    5. overall, the drumset, bass, guitar and keyboard MUST play a simple music on stage for the other band members to listen to. everyone MUST be able to hear EVERYONE else. if a guitarist cannot hear his sound (happens all the time), he should stand nearer to his guitar amp. same goes to other band members; if bassist cannot hear his bass sound, walk nearer to his bass amp.

    6. at this point, the band should balance by itself. once it is balanced, the soundman just need to release the sound to the house. he just need to amplify the band sound as flat or EQ the sound a little bit. if the band is balanced on stage, the soundman will have an easy job.

    7. vocals: the lead vocal MUST be louder than 2 backing vocals. ONLY the lead vocal is the loudest among all band members. the 2 backing vocals can level with the other musical instruments.

    8. monitor speakers: rely on them like a pinch of salt. we played many gigs… and less than half the time, they work decently. so, train your ears to listen to amps and drumset acoustically. uglymen is so FRUckSTRATED over the years that we dont rely on monitors. if there are monitors, then good, if there’s none, good. if we can’t listen to what we sing on stage, no problem cause its been like that for years. to us, monitor speakers are good to have but we dont usually get it to sound useful for us.

that’s the reason we make the simplest balance on stage so that the soundman at the mixer console can amplify/mix our sound easily.

what i dislike about a soundman is that, the previous band who played too loud sounded ok but the band playing after the loud band sounded suck because the soundman just maintained the previous EQ/setting of the previous band and do nothing to the current band.

as i said, last HAPPY SATURDAY, i wanted to go to the mixer console when PAKU played and lowered the guy’s guitar sound, EQ the bass, balanced them and boost the vocal.

of course i’d love to hear others’ opinions about the sound that day.

  • fleaman // Nov 21, 2007 at 9:06 am

my 2 cents worth of comment… u r right suan..!
for me,i just dislike sound check.. coz i am deaf… anyway.. hahahahahaha…
    and i don’t play music…! hhehehehehehe

thanks for yuour email. i will consider any of teh things there. HAPPY SATURDAY DEBRIEFING at starbucks will commence shortly. please be able to make it . thnkx

  • taisuan // Nov 22, 2007 at 2:46 pm

kelvyn, thanks for giving all out to make this happened. it was a success man.

organizers do get worried when things don’t go as scheduled / plan. we always strive to make things easy for organizers and soundman. they have to manage a lot of performers and bands, its a headache.

let me know early about the debriefing. i can arrange my time.

  • michael // Nov 22, 2007 at 5:54 pm

yes… I enjoyed the event very much… hiccups are unavoidable in shows…

I wil come the briefing if I got bike…

    zzzzz……..

  • michael // Nov 24, 2007 at 11:03 am

    kiwi… pls careful wat u say lo….
u duno how much effort i put in to promote uglyboyz…

  • beh // Nov 24, 2007 at 5:19 pm

    fleaman,
Anything can be happened while playing live; and if the band carry out proper sound check, and got a good experience soundman, that nite I would like to tell you, uglymen gonna kick lotta ASSEs…..

but too bad each time uglymen couldn’t kick not becoz’ they couldn’t play, it all due to sound quality “sound blancing”…
    =================================

Suan, since you guys got problem in doing the sound check things coz’ the distance things for michael and personal stuffs…I think of one of the good way…

Ask Micheal to buy wireless outlet for his guitar; on spot walk up straight to the PA system and play the intro and do the adjustment there or ask someone like kelvyn or anyone do it together rite before playing…

You guys have to help yourself in playing the live becoz’ I want to see you guys kick ass!!! I was totallly disapointed with that nite’s ugly performance….

For me, this is learning experience; plz do not repeat the mistake or at least try not to repeat the mistake again and again and have some improvement on your weaknesses…Uglymen’s weaknesses is “sound balancing” in live gig…

    rockon!

  • taisuan // Nov 24, 2007 at 8:37 pm

beh, understand your points. will try our best to soundcheck the next time around. if i have known earlier, i could have gotten kelvyn to balance for us — at least he has the ears to do it.

kiwiisfruit, in order for you guys to really play in such event/festival/gigs, u have to work on it and prove yourself extremely hard. if michael were to pull out from helping you guys, i’m not sure if you guys are able to sustain as a band. to be extremely blunt, you need to *help* yourself in your band. there’s nothing positive for me to say that you guys are a great band except that i know michael molded you guys to be where you are today.

  • michael // Nov 24, 2007 at 9:03 pm

thank you suan… i think i no need say anything liao… oways say i no care ugboyz… swt…

    beh,
i am not saying we are good in sound balancing or wat, but hoh… u must oso understand that sound balancing during live is 80% rely on the sound engineer and crew la… we cant do anything on that… the show was VERY rush that nite, we din even hv enuf time to check the sound la… and that feedback kept on coming, din know wat’s wrong also.

the setting is exactly same when afternoon where eclipse play, that time no problem at all wo.. anyway, about the wireless, i already bought last two week, just did not use yet..

thank you for telling us this, i know we could hv been better… i watched from DVD, we sounded like 10,000kg of mud la…

  • ERIC JOHNSING // Nov 25, 2007 at 2:26 am
