my guitar inspiration

April 17th, 2008 by taisuan · 7 Comments

not many guitarists inspire. for most of my playing influence, guitarists such as eric johnson, yngwie malmsteen, kenny wayne shepherd and stevie ray vaughn are all fender stratocaster players. i have nothing against humbucker guitar players but i just can’t play a humbucker guitar.

i *tried* to like a humbucker guitar and even bought one in 2004 for a few days before selling it off. sad. humbucker guitars supposed to be powerful but somehow it doesn’t suit my taste.

the guitar players whom i mentioned above have inspired me very much from young especially yngwie malmsteen but i do not play anything like him or any of the rest of the guitarists. some people manage to play like them, i wish i could :(

there is however, one guitar player whom is a humbucker guitar player that i like very much. he’s a local guitarist from the band lefthanded. his name is samad. uglymen know him personally and he has great touch on the guitar, at least to my ears. even if his theory and notes repertoire are limited, his sound is inspiring.

catch him play here with hong kong band DSC.

nafas terakhir

to my ears, the drummer seems like struggling on the songs. especially “nafas terakhir”.

the other humbucker guitarist who inspires me is kyoji yamamoto — he was an invited artist in ella’s album during the 90’s. his instrumental song “itulah saya” was incredible, great touch, HUGE dynamics and aggresive feel. the tone is to die for!

samad and kyoji yamamoto were featured in local guitar instrumental CD called mentera metal — i love this CD very much until today. believe it or not, i have 1 cassette and 2 CDs of mentera metal. i lost the last CD. probably need to search my house or else need to buy again. :(

oh… forgot about BEYOND. they are my BIGGEST band influence. the rest of the bands are metallica, GnR, X Japan, Extreme, Lamb of God. mostly these bands have great guitar riffs.

    Influence….Inspiration….

as reminder note…. must have self sounding, style…. IF not….it became COPY….

“What an annoying 1:1 copy… or let’s say an attempt of copying. I’m not saying this guy can’t play - he can… but he’s got zero own musical personality”

“Man Kidal is always copy of Yngwie Malmsteen. I wonder what if when Yngwie picking his nose and eat dog food, will this copy guy follow? ”

“tell me please, why this guy is trying to copy yngwie malmsteen so much, with the black les paul acoustic model, and the hair, and the leather pants, its fucking annoying. ”

I got these from youtube..when you search on “man kidal”….. I totally agree with the 1st quote!!!

Wow wow wow.. hold your horses Beh..
its the word “influence”… not “wannabe”!
even mikey sounds like beyond at times…!
even tai suan wanna be like malmsteen in his teens…

but i think once the skill skill are there, they should breakout and stamp their “own” mark!

Anyway… everyone hast their hero…. to look up to…!

I have mine.. i think u have yours too!

best malaysian musicians i have watched, they might not be the best, but they are the ones that i was very lucky to watch them play or jammed with:

elec guitarist: none. i am way below and miles behind the better guitarists in malaysia, dont get me wrong. what i am trying to say is, still not one guitarist in malaysia make me WA! yet… but samad, hillary, jamie wilson (aus), are all very very good guitarists…

acc guitarist: kenny tay (super enjoyable)…. paul ponodurai is one of the most amazing guitarist in the world, but i havent got that luck to watch him play :-(

    michael,
grad that you got my point here…

Being a musician like you or anyone out there, they first must defind their “musical personality” like the 1st quote said!

You take a look or listen to those angmorkao guitarist like Joe, Kirk , Steve , Yngwie and etc etc etc …. they all inspire, influence by jimi hendrix but do they sound like hendrix??? no rite???

in order for ppl to look up or pick your sound(music) up you got to have your very own special unique self style, style that totally own by you and only you.

man kidal can play but when you watch those clips… what you see is a clone of yngwie, that’s it.. so what is the point????

You must think of a way to settle down you things and move on!!!!take care and hope to hear from your tone!!! hopefully SOON!!!!

side note*** nothing is unbreakable or cannot be solve; the matter is how you deal with it; I know saying is a lot easier than doing; but hack its life; life full of challenges and we must learn how to face them(problems, challenges) alot of times. we have to move on, look forward, and make our life more colorful, cheerful and joyful!!!
