it all started on a drowsy, sleepy friday (27th feb) morning when i casually took up my phone and dialed paul, my half brother, i asked him whether he could help me buy jason mraz live concert ticket, as i only came to know the concert less than two weeks ago. since he is a die-hard mraz fan and has stuck mraz's tunes in his ears since early 2003. well, i did not expect myself to be in kl the following week anyway…

me: paul, u sure go to see mraz one, bought how much one ticket? can buy the cheapest one for me (rm88)?
paul: oh.. i think rm88 sold out liao loh… i bought seated one.

me: wa… expensive la over rm200…
paul: wait wait… (talking to some one bside him)

me: so how ah?
paul: u come kl for holiday la and we can watch together, i buy you the ticket la…

me: wtf… u serious? no need la…
paul: come come… come la knnccb, so long no see you. dont worry the ticket la.

well, here am i, in kl, 5 days later. i coundnt remember when was the last time i had a holiday. since early 2008. i was actually quite excited since the night before boarding my flight here after 1am at flamengo, went home and could not sleep at all. there was only one thing i miss after landing, i wish silver was here.

arrived 9.20am in kl, took in-flight breakfast (not bad to be frank), then skybus to kl sentral, first stop was a coffee bean where i took my own sweet time to finish the whatever-it-is-called blended drink, it was really relaxing as i could feel i just literally dumped everything behind in alor star and revitalising myself here. hmm…. eh…. infact, coffee bean was the only stop i made there. you just coundnt understand how much i missed the coffee, yeah yeah, there are coffee beans in penang, sp, wherever (for those who dont know, kampung alor star no have coffee bean one) i know, but my work does not permit me to travel at all.

around 2pm, i boarded the lrt to pasar seni, where i never been before in my entire life, but heard people saying many cheap knock-offs stuff there… so i bought a pair of sunglasses and fake lv bag… ate a bowl of prawn mee minus the prawn which is reasonably priced. later spent around 45 minutes at popular bookstore

5.45pm….damn, that mutherfxcker got a new car.. got to meet edward (met in alor star), and a cool guy eugene from penang, they are all colleagues with paul. we drove by stadium negara and at 6pm already so loooooooooooong the queue. paul said, u see, smart people buy seated ones, those queuing up are free standing infront of the stage, we got our seat booked… that reminded me of the BEYOND concert i attended in 1991 at the same venue, where i almost suffocated in front the stage, seeing people fainting, vomitting, shoving, screaming, and… did not enjoy the music myself.

6.30pm we ate some noodles at some road side stalls, which tasted like what i cooked at home…nothing special.

7.30pm we reached the venue and damn, it was so so so fucking hot inside, what happened to the air cond? there were mraz t shirts selling as expected…at sky high price, anyway, i didnt think they got my size.

8.30pm lights off show starts. it has been so long i did not pen long blog entries til i cant recall many words to use now. mraz was simply amazing as once the show started, we almost forgot about the humid, sweat, and thirst. i am so glad that paul bought one of the best seats in the venue. just fine to listen on the whole (balancing, loudness), comfy, and no need to shove here there. together with mraz were drummer, bassist, horn sections (three), keyboardist, and partner-in-crime toco rivera.

the crowd started singing with mraz from song number 1 to the very last beat of the concert, this was really crazy, even i cant remember all the lyrics. mraz is one of the very best, and few entertainers, espcially with his stage presence and sexy voice.

its a shame he lost out, just, on the grammy to john mayer. however, who cares, he made my trip so so so worthy that i will bang my head on the wall til i die if i did not come.

not many international live acts i have been to…hmm… BEYOND (1991, 1993, 1994, 1996, 2005), gloria esterfan (1990,91?), but jason was just simply too outstanding from what i have seen so far, live, or on dvd of other artistes…

one funny thing at the concert was special guest penny tay duno go where liao when mraz was singing Lucky, and she came up to the stage just right before her part in the song. like many others said in the forum, including all my friends who went there, it was a total miss-matched.

the song could have been better if jason were to sing alone. not saying penny sounded bad, but jason was simply too good and blown penny away.

the concert was pretty short, about 90minutes, but there wasnt a single second that i failed to enjoy.

i took a video of “i'm yours” and you can see thousands of fans singing together. the attendance was just below 10,000 my guess. (i've uploaded the clip on youtube, see above)

10pm i followed paul and eugene back to their office, where i witness their data room, wahaha… including uglymen.net also stored there, paul is a no-nonsence kick ass guy and he is more than deserved of what he is today by climbing the corporate ladder to higher grounds, patiently, diligently, and smartly, i am really proud of him, make me feel so paise to what i have achieved…sigh….. after this holiday must go back work hard liao…

11.30pm back to paul's house where ah siong (long-lost brother, hehehehe) is also staying there, we chatted many things, catching up some pre-historic stories of us.

12.45am went out for dinner (i mean supper).

I got this album couple days ago… Listen and listen to it again and again before I am conducting this review and share some of my thoughts with you guys….

Got a lot of metallica's fans had been disapointed with their previous album st.anger ….

With this Magnetic, I think metallica will gain back their fans heart coz' they are back to thrash metal…..metallica's signature music….

10 tracks from this nineth studio album.

In this album, when you listen to it, it has metallica thrash metal smell yet with new sounding. They are not repeating the sound that they had done before and move forward generating new sounding; actually if you listen to metallica 1st album to this 9th album all of them got different sounds, which is very impressive!!!

Again, Metallica boyz took up the challenge and push the limits in creating their new own songs/music. Its ain't easy for a band keep writting new stuff and keep on rolling. Metallica is one of the band that I respect the most and my all time favorite!!!

I like this album and MetallicA is back to Metal!!! Do yourself a favor and check it out!!!

This was given by my sister-in-law while I was in the States in 1995 as a gift!!!

This was I bought in 1995 at Great Salt Lake Guitar inc, when I was there!!! I remember when first I look at the guitar, I said to myself I m gonna bring it home one day!!! I worked part-time, and save up the money and bring it home with me after a year or so!!! This is my first high range electric guitar!!! after another year, I changed the pickups to EMGs…due to Metallica's influences!!!

In 1996, I save up enough money, I actually want to buy Gibson LesPaul Classic Premium at the same shop I bought my ibanez(above)….but when I was there that time, the shop owner sold the guitar, instead I look at this beauty…the price almost the same as the LesPaul classic premium plus!!!so I decided to take in this guitar and bring it home with me… I discover its round neck after I brought it home with me; I put it in the case and seldom play it….this is collector's item to me…till now it still with me…

I exchange my ovation (white color one) to this beauty at the same shop I got my ibanez and LesPaul!!! I got this guitar becoz' of WongKaKui!!! I saw him play this guitar in the live 1991!!!! SO again, I save up money and bring this beauty home as well in 1997!!!! when 1998, I was back to malaysia, I brought this guitar with me. during beyond live at malaysia 1999 if not mistaken, I brought this guitar and have three of them autograhp!!! since then, this guitar never been played…its another collector item for me!!!

In year 2000, I have enough saving..so I search for what kind of guitar I want to buy; by luck I met this guy who wants to let go his KH-2 Vintage; so I grab this chance and buy this guitar thru Ebay, I put all my saving to this guy that I never meet before; I was very worry that after he clear the money order and won't send me the guitar!!! but luckily I met a good guy, he did sent me the guitar!!! This is the most expensive guitar that I brought in my collection!!! it came with two Certificates..1 signed by kirk himselt and another 1 was printed out the signs… the serial no is 009….later I found out ESP going to mess production this guitar and name “kh2 skully”…. with different serial no…I feel kinda got cheated by ESP…since then I told myself no to buy artist series guitars, they are over price!!!

This guitar I got it from Uglymen's mikey!!! my guitar teacher, my buddy!!! Mike always change his guitars like changing baju, seldom have a guitar tat can sastify him, hopefully M1 can stay with him forever; I got a very good deal from him!!! I bought from him at 2004!!!(correct??) This guitar also have 3 EMGs 2 single coils and an hambucker with it!!!

I always want to have a tailor made guitar with single coils…finally, mike told me one of his student want to let go his fender strat Mexico….I imediately buy this guitar from his student and take about six months' saving to save the money from the guitar parts and the pickups things…this guitar got killer tone, i love it so very much!!! I got this guitar with me at 2008!!!! I must thanks Mike and Suan for this guitar!!! Without any of them, this guitar won't existing..and with me now..Thanks Mike and Angkong Suan!!!

This fender american stratocaster ash deluxe, when I brought my fender guitar to the guitar shop's time; one of my friend told me that the shop got this baby!!! At malaysia its extream hard to came across this deal, even this guitar cost me alot, pain for my pocket but still I go for it!!! and I didn't regret after I got it..this guitar is in show room condition, juz the owner want to go back to his country and wants to let go this baby!!! So, I brought this guitar home with me when I put my mexico strat it that shop at 2008 June…And that friend is our angkong Suan, he poison me!!! Anyhow, I have to thanks SUAN for helping me, guiding me and giving me a lot of advices in guitars, and life stuff….thanks SUAN!!!
now I am broke!!! I am sharing this to all the friends here…each of my guitar got a story behind!!! and I work hard earn the money and buy them!!!! the 8 guitars not coming easily!!!! I love them all!!!

My guitar is a MExico Fender strat, I changed fretwires, pickups, nobs, 5 channel switch…basically everything but the wood and machine head of the guitar. Remember I told you guys I am going to built my very 1st custom built guitar for myself??? Here it is!!!

Before putting up those parts…

The work in putting the guitar parts together is done by DIN, allah-DIN, god of guitar and god father of rock&roll from Penang. Thanks to him!! His work its superb!!! Great in every works he done for my guitar – fret works!! wiring works!! work in setting, tuning and blancing up those pickUPs!!!

I used to be a hambarker's fans for long long long time and this is my 8th guitar(2 acoustics, 6 electric guitars in my collection). within the 6 electric guitars in my collection, 4 of them are equip with EMGs, I love and believes EMGs are more powerful than other pickups and I love it sounds; Then till I met this angkong(god)”TaiSuan”!!! He introduced me true single coil pickup and this had changed my taste towards “pickUps sound liking” totally!!!

As I prefer more powerful sounding pickups, so in the pickups selection, I chose lollar's SPECIAL, its the most powerful true single coil pickUps within lollar's model, it has the maximum out put; where as Suan's lollar BlackFace has softer out put then mine.

Yesterday, we tried with the same amp, same setting…. My guitar got more ticker tone, stronger sounding…My guitar is more suitable for playing heavy stuff…I like both guitar's sound…where Suan's, it got killer CLEAN tone!!!

From this experience, I started to understand that single coil also can generate tick/powerful sound by working together with the guitar amp. You have to know how to drive your amp with your axe in generating the sound, tone you like.

Now, I started to understand why ppl said hambarker is noisy, dirty…I love my very first debut custom built guitar!!! and I would like to say a BIG thanks to Mr.AngKong SUAN!!! For introduce me single coil pickuPs!! Mikey for helping me find this beauty!!!Last but not least, Thanks to Din for the wonderful, superb workmanship in putting all those parts together for me and help me tune up the guitar with tiptop condition!!!

For the first time in kedah, a total of 8 bands combined to bring out the best ever Ghost Festival celebration in alor star, over 7 hours of rock music for the appreciative crowd. again, thank you to ah hwa (Billows' bassist) for giving me the chance to organise the band shows. it was a great success thanks to every one.

my inspiration of creating an intro dance for Uglymen came from watching a japanese band “Hotdog Buddy Buddy”. but i thought of making it funnier and crazier rather than just swaying around, so there you go, super hiao faces and dance moves with a new melody to accompany with. the voice which introduces uglymen is Ric Tan, the guy who said MU will white wash Newcastle 6-0 before the match. The dance is certainly a breakthrough for Uglymen. for your information, we did the dance for the first time in Taiping gig, back then, the banner was a combination of 22 A4 papers coloured with marker pens and correction pen (liquid paper)… i am currently desiging new dance steps…

“Speakers, Performer, Judges, Guest…”

Actually there is nothing to shout about being a speaker or judge, but behind the scene, to me is quite important, as i am not upgrading through an academic source, like attending college or workshops, one of the many ways to always improve myself and make myself aware that i am not good enough, is to speak about music infront of many attentive ears. in order to say something really useful and relevant to the anticipating crowd, i have to equip myself with loads of knowledge and updates, making sure i am always ahead of them. Meanwhile, november 2007 was the 15th time i was luckily to be invited to judge a music competition, 7 times being in Yamaha Asian Beat, missing out as judge of the national finals last year was a pain (collided with Happy Saturday show). As a judge, you look at a band differently compared to normal audience, you look into every aspect, and you see all super mind-blowing bands perform, and it often reminds me of how much i have not achieved, and a lot of hard work to be done to always upgrade uglymen and myself. In addition, you get to know new pro-musicians friends, and learn many tricks in the trend as well.

The reason i put the Fever gig and BM gig higher than Taiwan Springscream was bcos we had much more crazier crowd in kuching and bm, and they really appreciate our music and drove us to go crazier in our shows. Fever pub was crazy bcos i had never seen before SO MANY cameras flashing when u are performing, not to mention those DSLR… haha…. for a splilt second, we felt like super stars on stage (look carefully where was Charlene looking while the bloggers were snapping photos in the 1st pic.. kekeke)…. While in BM back in August 2007, the crowd in Jit Sin was super crazy where you can see people carrying guys pushing them around on top of their heads.. eh we have a term in calling that act? i duno…
But…. the craziest crowd should still go to UpLift Da Fusion, thanks to ah hui and gang, back in 2006.

to make it sound not so hao lien, i wil make it short, from the frist day i enrolled my students for music exams back in 1998, there is NO failure until today. Roughly remembered: piano (39 candidates), guitar (60 candidates). Highlighting Chan Qi Sheng and Muhd Taufik being the first students to obtained distinction (piano) in Kedah for Rock Music School (2007, started teaching Rock Music School Syllabus in Kedah in 2007) and back in 1999 Lim Boon Kee as the first student to obtain distinction in guitar (Penang) for AMU. However, failures are expected no matter how good you teach or how good your students are… we'll see who's the unlucky number one…

I want to thank ah thye for calling me into this band (although he still wants me to play keyboard.. leh mah), he always says i play better keyboard than guitar, i think i play best is FIFA 2008 la…. kanneh… After joining this band, i learnt many stuff which are all impossible to read from text book… haha. Its a real fun to play with them though i sometimes really tired running around with two bands…. like the juz-ended gong xi fa cai carnival… Thanks again to all the wonderful musicians Boon, Hwa, Thye, Foo~ Billows.

at Number 2~ M1 the Ultimate Guitar

M1 = michael 1, the parts i also not really remembered from where liao… only notably pickups from Australia kinman, nut from US earvana, bridge and ports from US callaham, pickguard jacks from US clayton. VERY VERY VERY VERY light body (u have to carry it to blif) bcos i ordered it thinner than standard strat, the bridge is fixed, and to be honest, this is the BEST guitar i've ever played, bcos it was customed to my playing needs and within my ability, and also my favourite woody colour no matter is sunburst or one tone, i like wood colour. Though, i still have some very very personal favourites besides M1, Washburn N4 is still my favourite, but i have to change the super heavy pickups b4 i can play them again. Then, if its possible for me, i like to lay my hands a Fender Aerodyne and Parker Fly, Les Paul also not bad… eh… think think…. M1 still the best, far far better than any of the above… probably not to others, but to my needs, yes.

“UGLYMEN walking into its 14th Year (2007)”

“Uglymen's 14th year in the making”, its all about music and friendship, and….. bringing joy to others by spreading all our ugly recipies to friends and supporters… Uglymen is important to me bcos i treat them like family, like maybe tomorrow (saturday) i go visit Suan, and pls get ready your BIG FAT red packet filled up with hot hot cash for me! WAHAHAHAHA!!
talking about family….. i want my ang pow!!! and ah hooi also, bcos i “do so much business” with him every nite… leh mah… UGLYMEN 万岁!

Me, hang around with this band uglymen quite sometimes, seeing them went up and then down and then UP again; this writting is all base on my personal feeling, thoughts and nothing to do with the band uglymen.

I still recall the “hard & heavy” gig which was held…when??? F!!! I had forgotten what year…it was long long long time ago; that was the first uglymen gig that I attended!!! During that time, it was 4 members. My feeling towards them was like these guys really rocking my world off… I still young at that time and head banging all the way, yes all the way. And the next following days plus I guess a week time or more, my neck couldn't move smoothly….was like a robot….if you never head banging in a rock concert and head bang for the first time then you will feel what I feel during that time.

My thoughts was I couldn't find a band like them, really know how to rock, kick my ass off with their axes and by their music/performance on the stage. And you know what??? Many of their songs are original!!! self compose!!! During that time I only know Suan, and not very friend with MIke and Metal.

Our relationship since that day growing, each time uglymen got gig or jamming I will try my best to go and watch them; only in recent, I dedicated most of my time in my biz miss quite a bit of ugly gigs…

I have to skip skip and fastforward***long story***… then once, I heard a broken heart news…Suan told me…beh uglymen maybe will stop rite there and no more… I was like what are you talking about?? why?? You got so big head you could solve anything what…why you said this kind of shitty shit to me??? They were facing one of their member leaving the band for some reasons….

During that time I was looking at them and thinking that could be the end of uglymen the band… Then suddenly the big head stand out and be a drummer of uglymen, so uglym4n became uglym3n. Big head play guitar for ten years plus and know nothing about drumming and throw away things that he was good at and pick up things that he was completely new at….this is real challenge for him and its a very brave move to him…

Guess what, after pratice for couple months I went to KL with them for their virgin uglym3n gig, if not mistaken I think it was called “live gig 7″, soundwall was the organisor that time… They sound like shit!!! where was the uglymen??? Ppl were asking??? where is uglymen???

Uglym3n have the thought of maybe they want to end the band, due to they really couldn't play with the new drummer. Hooi was told to find a new drummer for replacement and ask Suan play guitar back; becoz' Suan couldn't play the drum and Mike couldn't use his guitar playing to support the songs; they did looking for one but couldn't find the right one. then back to the starting point where they had started…luckily they couldn't find the replacement and keep on going, its the hardest time for uglymen during that time; they even push away some gigs at that time…

Suan really work his ass off; I never seen such person that so tough in my life; things that he want to get it done sure he will work his ass off and till he gets to the points “done”. I think that's why he gotten a big head!!! so hard and tough!!!

Today, when I look up uglym3n, they are back and can kick ass!!!

When in uglym4n's era, they got a lot of things to care; concern of. Like playing gig, songs choice, style, and they couldn't move or make the decision right the way. Now, uglym3n, a lot easier then when it was uglym4n.  Less members, less worries, less conflit, everything less so a lot easier for them in decision making.

Musicwise, Uglym4n's era, they play the same things again and again and again and again… boring man, that's how I feel about it if compare to uglym3n….uglym3n they are moving forward in creating new sounding, dance and anything they could think of and come out with, some are really wild and crazy yet funny also, like the recent's ugly dance….

The Drummer got different in attitude; new one always read up a lot of things and find out how to use the new toys, gears or new ways to improve the ugly music or live performance. New drummer had read up a lot of books about drumming, if you got a chance please pay him a visit; he had bought a lot of DVDs, zines, books and seek for improving in his drumming. The old one sad to say it, but it's true, I never seen him buying things or come up something new while he was in the band. That's why I said it's different in attitude… Wtih the new drummer's attitude I believe you guys will enjoy alot coz' he always come out new things in his playing.

Mike's guitar tone still cannot beat Suan's…But mike is getting there…Dun forget now mike it's playing the rhythym and lead and singing at the same time; this is also a challenge for him. If talking about guitar, mike's tone got great improvement!!! At very least he knew how to make his guitar sing, cry, scream and shout now….last time, mike's guitar know only how to shout…

Uglym4n Bassist Vs Uglym3n Bassist

hmmm…Metal's bass got improve from the past also but not much…For me Metal got great improvement in singing; since uglym3n only have 3 members left; he got no choice but to take up some singing part!! which is good for him coz' he can get alot of chicks!!!

Uglym4n Vs Uglym3n

 Uglym4n = 4, uglym3n =3(easy for me)… 4 noise, 3 more clean in music(playing live); 4 more boring, 3 more interesting. 3 now keep improving and their music more dynamic; I would describe it got more muscle then 4's era. I perfer 3's…3 of coz' more kick and rock then 4's….

***side note

Suan told me about not to give up easily…and today Suan had proven to me that want to be a sucessful man/woman in your life you are not allow to quit…have to keep it up and moving forward no matter how hard it is… If you quit, you are the loser!!! you lose all and game over!!!
